General Information on the 2011 Chicago Regional
-
Bridge kits will be available on the IIT campus in the Office of
Undergraduate Admission, Perlstein Hall room 101. Perlstein Hall is on
the northwest corner of State and 33rd streets. The IIT
visitor parking is on the southeast corner of State and 33rd.
Admission Office hours are:
Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
If you need to pick up kits on weekends or make special
arrangements, call the IIT Office of Admission at 312-567-3025 and
speak with Margarita Fraga.
Because of potential for theft, we can no longer
accept any cash for bridge kits. Personal, school checks or money
orders made out to "IIT Bridge Contest" will be accepted.
-
Each kit consists of 15 2-foot pieces of 3/32 inch
square cross-section basswood. Any commonly available glue may be used.
Prices are $5.00 for a single kit and $45.00 for a 10-pack.
Please telephone ahead and reserve quantities larger than 20 kits.
Payment by check is required. Since
the "profit" that is made when you buy wood from the Bridge Building
Committee is used exclusively to pay for prizes, trophies and
certificates, entries from any school that
buys less than 10 kits from IIT will be asked to pay an entry fee of $45.00
to help defray costs.
-
Each bridge shall be entered under a single student name. Every
entry will receive a Certificate of Merit for participation. Winners will
receive special certificates as well as prizes, and their schools will be
awarded trophies for display. There will be identical sets of prizes and
trophies for each of the three Chicago area Regions: City, North Suburban
and South Suburban.
-
The IIT Admissions office is graciously providing a light buffet meal for
participants, teachers, and parents.
-
Hold your school contest soon, so that your winners may participate in the
Chicago Regional Contest - and maybe the International Contest!
-
You may use the Chicago Regional Rules
for your school contest if you wish. Any questions concerning
interpretation of the rules should be directed to Mr. George Krupa, Chief
Judge, at gekrupa@aol.com.
For any other questions please
contact Prof. John Kallend at
kallend@iit.edu.
-
At the conclusion of the student competition, we
will be holding an adult competition. Teachers, Engineers, and
parents are encouraged to bring their own bridges and compete informally
against one another (students are not allowed to help design or construct
these bridges!).
This year the International Contest will be held at Illinois Institute of
Technology in Chicago, Illinois.
Only Regional winners will be eligible to participate. The top two winners
from each of the three Chicago Regions will be supplied the information
needed to register for the International Contest.
